SACE for the environment

The impact of our external and internal activities on the environment

In line with the new national approach defined on the basis of the COP26 Statement on International Public Support for the Clean Energy Transition, we are committed to promoting a culture that is attentive to climate and environmental protection also in our business activities.

What we do within the company

We have set ourselves specific goals in terms of our environmental impact, including the adoption of eco-friendly strategies and measures, like the reduction in energy consumption; separate waste collection and recycling; development of Mobility Management programs; the re-use of corporate assets that are still functioning, extending their lifespan with the “Zero Rifiuti” [“Zero Waste”] initiative; the paperless campaign, which has contributed to emptying the SACE offices of superfluous paper, and halving the number of printers and the replacement of paper magazines and newspapers with digital versions to reduce emissions from the distribution process. A focus on the environment is, now, an essential component for the sustainability of a company and for the long-term growth of the whole economy. For this reason, since 2018, SACE and its subsidiaries have embarked upon a path aimed at obtaining and keeping the UNI EN ISO 14001:2015 certification, whose Application Scope includes the Rome, Milan, Bologna and Mestre branches, implementing a policy aimed at protecting the environment and the region.

What we do in our business activities

In order to ensure that the environmental and social impact of our projects complies with international standards, we have set up a specific “Environment Unit” and implemented a system of guidelines for due diligence in relation to export credit transactions, not restricting ourselves to a preventive analysis. Depending on the degree of complexity and potential environmental and social impact, we actively monitor projects involved, checking, over time, their compliance with international standards and collaborating to resolve any deviation issues.

The process for assessing the potential environmental impacts of projects implemented overseas is described in detail here and is based on compliance with the rules and principles contained in the Recommendation issued by the OECD: “Common Approaches on Officially Supported Export Credits and Environmental and Social due diligence”. In line with the requirements of the OECD Recommendation, SACE has a policy for disseminating environmental information that, among other things, provides for all transactions subject to assessment:

  • prior disclosure with the publication of the Environmental and Social Impact Assessment (ESIA) of the category A transactions over 30 days prior to the final decision regarding issuing the insurance guarantee;
  • post disclosure with the periodic publication, subsequent to the resolution to guarantee category A and B transactions.

Environmental News

Below, the environmental and social impact assessments are available for the transactions being assessed in category A and, every six months, the information relating to category A and B transactions that are guaranteed.
