Environmental and Social Impact Assessment availability for the “Meghna Steel Mill and Rerolling Plant” Project

SACE is assessing the “Meghna Steel Mill and Rerolling Plant” Project, which entails the construction of a scrap steel-based, greenfield steel mill and rerolling plant with a capacity of 1.4 million metric tonnes of billets per year and rebar capacity of 0.9 million metric tonnes per year. The plant will be situated within the Cumilla Economic Zone (CuEZ) located in Bangladesh.

The facility uses electric arc furnace (EAF) technology to melt scrap iron sourced globally from the United States of America (USA), Europe and Middle East. The Project comprises the main production facilities such workshops for scrap steel processing, smelting, continuous casting, and steel rolling, as well as the necessary auxiliary facilities. In addition, a Project captive wharf facility for receiving scrap metal will be developed on a branch of the Meghna River.

SACE is conducting the environmental and social review of this Project on the basis of the Environmental and Social Impact Assessment (ESIA) prepared for the Project. The ESIA is available on the International Finance Corporation (IFC) website at the following link: Disclosure - Meghna Re-Rolling & Steel Mills Limited.
